Elizabeth

A thoughtful evaluation, particularly in view of Iraq/Afghanistan (I now live in New York!)

The second world war was certainly 'sold' in heroic terms though now 'crusade' has a rather charged ring to it.
I remember talking to Quentin Bell, years ago, about why more people were not conscientious objectors. He suggested that the second war had a much more moral imperative than the first whose causes really remain elusive apart from Imperialism, trade, arms build-up etc. etc.
Scarcely enough to get one's self killed for.
Your research is fascinating. Will it be a book soon?
